Generic Gabapentin and its uses

Generic Gabapentin is also FDA approved for the treatment of partial seizures in adults and children.

Generic Gabapentin may begin to work as early as 1 week after you start treatment. For some people, it may take longer to work. For others, the pain may not get better.

Generic Gabapentin is used to prevent two types of epileptic seizures; partial seizures, and partial seizures that spread to secondary generalized seizures. It is usually used as an add-on treatment for people whose epilepsy is not controlled using standard antiepileptic medicines, such as carbamazepine and phenytoin, or for people who cannot take these older medicines.

As Generic Gabapentin stabilizes electrical nerve activity, it can also be used to treat pain that occurs a result of damage to or a disturbance in the function of nerves (neuropathic pain).

Working Mechanism of Generic Gabapentin

Generic Gabapentin is used to prevent epileptic seizures. The way it works is not fully understood, however, it is thought to work by stabilizing the excessive electrical nerve activity in the brain.

Generic Gabapentin Dose

Take the missed Dose of Gabapentin as soon as you remember. However, if several hours have passed and it is almost time for the next dose of Gabapentin, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Gabapentin.

Excess Dose of Generic Gabapentin

Generic Gabapentin in excess may include symptoms such as double vision, drowsiness, slurred speech, diarrhea, poor coordination, and difficulty breathing.

Conditions for Storage of Generic Gabapentin

Store Generic Gabapentin at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Food and Drug Interactions with Generic Gabapentin

• Generic Gabapentin does not interact with other commonly used antiseizure medications.
• Indigestion remedies containing aluminium or magnesium may reduce the absorption of Gabapentin from the gut. Indigestion remedies should not be taken at the same time as a dose of gabapentin, or in the two hours before a dose.
• Antacids will decrease the amount of Gabapentin that is absorbed in the stomach. Do not take Gabapentin for at least 2 hours after a dose of antacid.
• Generic Gabapentin may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines, sedatives (used to treat insomnia), pain relievers, anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants.

Contraindications with Generic Gabapentin

There is no safety information regarding the use of Gabapentin in children under 6 years. It is therefore not recommended for this age group.

Do not take Gabapentin without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment or if you are breast-feeding a baby.

• Decrease in the number of white blood cells in the blood (leucopenia)
• Loss of memory (amnesia)
• Shaky movements and unsteady walk (ataxia)
• Unstable moods (emotional lability)
• Sleepiness (somnolence)
• Nervousness
• Small haemorrhage (bleeding) in the skin (purpura)
• Abnormal thinking
• Gut disturbances such as indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhoea
