Avapro or irbesartan belongs to the group of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works through preventing angiotensin II from narrowing blood vessels, helping to lower blood pressure.

Avapro is essentially prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure and can be used alone or with other medications.

Avapro is also prescribed for individuals who have type 2 diabetes as well as high blood pressure. Avapro can be prescribed to delay kidney damage especially in those who are in need of a kidney transplant or dialysis.

Avapro can also be used for other conditions and purposes as determined by your doctor.

Important Information about Generic Avapro

You should not take Avapro if you have an allergy to irbesartan.

In order to get the full benefits of Avapro, you need to take it regularly. Because blood pressure declines gradually, it could take several weeks before you start feeling better and get the full effects of the medication.

Note that Avapro should not be used as a cure for high blood pressure; it just keeps it under control.

There are some rare instances when Avapro could cause an extreme drop in blood pressure. The chances of this happening is increased when your body’s water supply is depleted by the use of high dosages of diuretic or dialysis treatments. Make sure that if you have the symptoms of low blood pressure such as dizziness, faintness and lightheadedness, you would be calling your doctor at once. Your dose may need to be altered.

Avapro belongs to the FDA pregnancy category D, which means that it may cause harm to a developing baby. You might also be advised by your doctor to use an effective form of birth control while taking Avapro.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Avapro

You should only take Avapro or irbesartan as your doctor has prescribed.

Each dose should be taken about the same time daily and can be taken with or without meals.

If you miss a dose of Avapro, you need to take it as soon as you can. However, if the next dose is almost up, you could just take the next scheduled one and skip the dose that you missed. Never take two does together.

If you overdose on Avapro, get medical help at once. Some of the symptoms of an overdose on Avapro include a rapid heartbeat or an abnormally slow one.

Possible Side Effects of Generic Avapro

Some of the side effects which can be caused by taking Avapro or irbesartan include fatigue, diarrhea, heartburn and respiratory tract infections.

Avapro can also cause dizziness or low blood pressure in individuals who have diabetic kidney disease.
