Indications for Generic Nexium

Nexium or esomeprazole magnesium is a medication which works by reducing stomach acid production.

Nexium is used for the relief of heartburn and the other symptoms which are caused by GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. It can also be used for the treatment of the erosive esophagitis caused by GERD as well as for the treatment of infections which cause most duodenal ulcers.

Nexium is commonly prescribed with antibiotics such as clarithromycin or amoxicillin.

Nexium can also be used for other conditions and purposes as determined by your physician.

Important Information about Generic Nexium

If you are also taking some other medications and drugs, let your doctor know first before taking Nexium to make sure that they would not be interacting with the drug. Some of the drugs which could increase, decrease or alter the effects of Nexium would include digoxin, diazepam, ketoconazole, iron salts and warfarin.

Nexium can safely be taken with antacids; however, seek the advice of your doctor first before combining the use of several drugs.

If you have any existing medical conditions that you are receiving treatment for such as liver disease or kidney disease, make sure to tell your doctor as your dose could be adjusted or changed.

Nexium belongs to the FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not expected to harm a developing baby. Nonetheless, you still need to tell your doctor if you are pregnant, are trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding before you take Nexium.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Nexium

Nexium or esomeprazole should only be taken as it has been prescribed and not in larger doses or for a longer time than what has been recommended by your physician for you.

Nexium should be taken at least an hour before meals. The delayed-release capsules of Nexium should be swallowed whole. Do not crush, break or chew the capsules as doing so could release too much of the medication at one time.

The regular dosage for the relief of GERD symptoms would be a 20 mg capsule taken once daily for four weeks. For the treatment of erosive esophagitis, the usual dosage is a 20 or 40 mg capsule taken once daily for four to eight weeks. For the treatment of duodenal ulcers, the typical dosage is a 40 mg taken once every day for ten days.

If you miss a dose of Nexium, make sure to take it as soon as you remember but if the next dose is almost up, you can just skip the missed dose and then take the next scheduled one. You should never take two doses together.

If you overdose on Nexium or esomeprazole, be sure to seek emergency medical help immediately. Some of the symptoms of an overdose on Nexium would include nausea, rapid heart rate, sweating, confusion, blurred vision, flushing, a dry mouth, headache and drowsiness.

Possible Side Effects of Generic Nexium

Nexium or esomeprazole may cause some side effects like headache, diarrhea and abdominal pain. These are usually just temporary and would go away on their own; however, if they do not or if you start experiencing more serious side effects, seek emergency medical help or contact your doctor right away.
