Indications for Generic Fosamax
Fosamax or alendronate sodium is generally used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It can also be used by men who have osteoporosis to increase bone mass. It can also be prescribed in men and women who have osteoporosis which is caused by the use of steroid medications like prednisone.
Fosamax can also be prescribed to relieve the symptoms of Paget’s disease of the bone, a painful condition which causes the bones to become deformed and to weaken.
Fosamax or alendronate sodium can also be used for other conditions as prescribed by your doctor.
Important Information about Generic Fosamax
You should not take Fosamax if you have an allergy to alendronate sodium or to other similar medications.
You should not take Fosamax if you have a low level of calcium in your blood. If your diet does not have enough vitamin D and calcium in it, you would need to take vitamin D and calcium supplements.
Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Engage in weight-bearing exercises to strengthen your bones.
You would not be able to take this medication if you are unable to sit upright or stand for at least 30 minutes. You should also avoid taking Fosamax if you have achalasia, which is a swallowing disorder, and your esophagus is not properly working. Also make sure to inform your doctor of any other medical conditions you have, particularly if you have digestive problems like ulcers or heartburn. This is because Fosamax could cause some problems in your esophagus such as ulcers, inflammation, bleeding and rarely, perforation or blockage.
If you tend to swallow air or choke when you drink something, then inform your doctor as you might be advised to not use the oral solution.
Fosamax or alendronate sodium should not be used by women who are having hormone replacement therapy or those who have kidney problems.
If you are taking antacids, calcium supplements or other medications, wait for at least 30 minutes after you take Fosamax before taking anything else. This would make sure that those other medications would not be interfering with the absorption of Fosamax.
Fosamax belongs to the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that its effects on a developing baby are not yet known. Make sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or are breastfeeding or are trying to become pregnant.
Dosage and Administration of Generic Fosamax
In order for you to get the full benefits of Fosamax or alendronate sodium, it is important that you take the tablets without meals or without other medications. Follow the exact dosing instructions of your physician.
Take each tablet or each bottle of the oral solution with plenty of water first thing when you wake up in the morning, not less than 30 minutes before you have your first meal or take your other morning medications. If you are able to wait longer before you eat or drink, then the medication would be absorbed even better. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after you have taken Fosamax and you have had something to eat.
Avoid sucking on or chewing the tablet as doing so could cause mouth sores.
If you miss a dose or Fosamax and you are taking it once daily, you should not take the missed dose later during the day. You can just skip it instead and then take your next regularly scheduled dose the following morning. Never take two doses together on the same day.
If you miss a dose of Fosamax and you are taking it once a week, you could take one tablet or one bottle of the oral solution the following morning after you remember and then go back to your regular once a week schedule. Never take two doses together on the same day.
If you overdose on Fosamax, get emergency medical assistance immediately. Some of the symptoms of an overdose on Fosamax include inflammation of the esophagus, heartburn, stomach upset and ulcer.
Possible Side Effects of Generic Fosamax
Fosamax or alendronate sodium could cause some side effects including bone and joint pain, acid regurgitation, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, muscle pain, gas, indigestion and nausea.
