Product Description

I. Fluconazole 200mg (4 Tablet) Medication

Fluconazole 200mg (4 Tablet) medication is an antifungal drug that belongs to the azole class. Generic Fluconazole 200mg (4 Tablet) prevents fungi from reproducing. It also injures the cell wall, so the cell cannot get the nutrients it needs to live.

Fluconazole 200mg (4 Tablet) medication is the preferred oral and intravenous antifungal to treat oropharyngeal, esophageal, and vaginal candidiasis, and also cryptococcal meningitis. It differs from ketoconazole (Nizoral) and itraconazole (Sporanox) in that oral absorption is excellent (not requiring gastric acid), and it distributes well into all body fluids, including cerebral spinal fluid, brain tissue, eye, and saliva. It may be used concomitantly with oral amphotericin or clotrimazole or nystatin for refractory candida infections.

AntiFungals: Information

Antifungals are medicines that are used to treat fungal infections. Like antibiotics, antifungals stop the germ (in this case a fungus) from functioning normally. But there are not as many different groups of antifungals as there are antibiotics. Azole antifungals (e.g. Fluconazole 200mg (4 Tablet), Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, Posaconazole, Ravuconazole, Voriconazole, Clotrimazole, Econazole, Miconazole, Oxiconazole, Sulconazole, Terconazole, Tioconazole) are used to treat serious fungus infections that may occur in different parts of the body.

Fungal Infections

Fungi, the word for more than one fungus, can be found on different parts of the body. Here are some common types of fungal infections:

  • Tinea is a type of fungal infection of the hair, skin, or nails. When it's on the skin, tinea generally begins as a small red area the size of a pea. As it grows, it spreads out in a circle or ring. Tinea is often called ringworm because it may look like tiny worms are under the skin (but of course, they're not!). Because the fungi that cause tinea (ringworm) live on different parts of the body, they are named for the part of the body they infect. Scalp ringworm is found on the head, and body ringworm affects the arms, legs, or chest.
  • Athlete's foot is another type of fungal infection that usually appears between the toes but can also affect toenails and the bottom or sides of the feet.
  • Jock itch is a fungal infection of the groin and upper thighs. You might think only men and boys get it, but girls and women can get it, too.
  • Candida is a yeast, similar to a fungus. It most often affects the skin around the nails or the soft, moist areas around body openings. Diaper rash in babies is one type of candidal infection, as is thrush (white patches often found in the mouths of babies.) Older girls and women may develop another form of candidal infection in and around the vagina. This is called a yeast infection.
  • Oral Thrush (in the mouth) looks like white or red patches. Oral thrush can cause sore throat, pain when swallowing, and nausea. It can also take away your appetite, make eating painful, and make food taste different. Treatments for oral thrush include mouthwash and tablets called troches. Some people try baking soda or hydrogen peroxide mixed with water to rinse the mouth. If the thrush is advanced, this isn't likely to work. Treatments for thrush include clotrimazole, Fluconazole 200mg (4 Tablet), and ketoconazole. These medicines have different brand names. These drugs sometimes lose their effects when taken for long periods of time, but new ways to use these medicines, and new drugs are being studied.
  • Vaginal candidiasis is a common yeast infection of the vagina. A yeast infection may be the first sign that a woman is HIV+. Some Symptoms include severe itching, burning, and a thick discharge, often white in color. It is possible that an infection such as unrecognized TB may be causing a vaginal yeast infection. Nystatin tablets are used for treatment. Clotrimazole ointment is another treatment, which is sold over-the-counter as Gyne-Lotrimin, Lotrimin, or Mycelex. Studies have shown that HIV-negative women may only have to take the medication Fluconazole 200mg (4 Tablet) one time to treat this condition. Always consult with your doctor before beginning treatment.
  • Cryptococcal meningitis is a very serious fungal infection. A fungus found mainly in dirt and bird droppings causes it. Meningitis means swelling of the meninges. The meninges cover the brain and spinal cord.
  • Symptoms can be hard to recognize as being caused by cryptococcal infection. Watch for fever, vomiting, headache, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and a general feeling of not being well. Other symptoms are a stiff neck and, infrequently, seizures. Pneumonia can be an early sign of infection. Tell your doctor about symptoms right away.
  • A common treatment for this condition is amphotericin B, which must be given by intravenous injection. A new treatment that can be given by pill, in some cases, or by intravenous injection is Flucanozole 200mg (4 Tablet), or Generic Fluconazole 200mg (4 Tablet). Most people prefer this treatment because it causes few side effects.
  • Histoplasmosis can be a life-threatening fungal infection and usually occurs in the Southwestern U.S. In the past, histoplasmosis was treatable only with intravenous amphotericin. Itraconazole is used today, although it may not be effective for treating histoplasmosis involving the central nervous system and brain, since it does not penetrate well into the cerebrospinal fluid, which is the fluid that surrounds the spinal cord and brain.
  • Blastomycosis is a fungal infection involving the lungs and occasionally spreading to the skin. The fungus is of unknown natural source. Most reported cases are from the southeastern states and the Mississippi River valley, and occur in men ages 20 to 40. When infection occurs in the lungs, a dry hacking or productive cough, chest pain, fever, chills, drenching sweats, and shortness of breath are initial symptoms. If untreated, the disease slowly causes death. Amphotericin B is highly effective. Improvement begins within a week, with rapid disappearance of organisms.

Fungi: Information

Fungi are plant-like organisms that lack chlorophyll. Fungi are one of the five kingdoms of life. Some fungi are good and useful (edible mushrooms would be an example of these) while some cause problems (some fungi can injure plants and people). There are over 100,000 species of fungi. Since they don't use light to make food, fungi can live in damp and dark places.

Naturally, there are two broad groups of fungi: yeasts and moulds. While not mutually exclusive, mould spores germinate to produce the branching filaments known as hyphae. Yeasts, on the other hand, are solitary rounded forms that reproduce by making more rounded forms through such mechanisms as budding or fission.

Typical yeast:

Note the multiple solitary small rounded forms. These are yeast because these rounded forms are the actively dividing, growing, and metabolizing form of the fungus. Reproduction occurs via budding (or fission) and the colonies are typically moist and mucoid.

Typical mould:

Note the interwoven filamentous forms colled as hyphae. The mass of hyphae is called a mycelium. The hyphae grow by elongation at their tips. At the ends of some of these hyphae are rounded forms that could be confused with yeast, but that are instead called conidia or spores. These rounded fungal forms are relatively metabolically inactive. They can be likened to seeds--they are alive, but they're not doing much. Rather, they are looking for a good place to live.

Side Effects of AntiFungals

Oral antifungals have both minor and dangerous side effects.

Minor side effects include:

  • Headaches.
  • Stomach upset.
  • Skin rashes.
  • Changes in taste sensation (rare, and with terbinafine only).
  • Visual disturbances (rare, and with terbinafine only).
  • Increased sensitivity of skin to sunlight (photosensitivity; with griseofulvin only).

Dangerous side effects of oral antifungals include:

  • Drug interactions: Generally prescribed medications can increase or decrease terbinafine or azole levels in your body. Similarly, other medications can build up in the bloodstream when taken with terbinafine or an azole. Let your health professional know what other medications you are taking before taking oral antifungal medications.
  • Liver damage or failure, requiring a liver transplant. A small number of deaths after liver failure have been linked to terbinafine and azoles. Warning signs of liver failure include: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, Fatigue, loss of appetite, Dark urine, Changes in skin color.

Itraconazole may cause heart failure. Warning signs of heart failure include:

  • Shortness of breath at rest, with mild exertion, or when lying flat.
  • Severe swelling of feet, ankles, legs, or abdomen.
  • Weight gain.
  • Fatigue.
  • Coughing up white or pink mucus.
  • Faster-than-usual heart rate.
